16明星大学心理学年報2012年第30号Relationship Between Social Support Exchanges withFriends and Ego Identities : Gender-based Differences AmongUniversity StudentsTOSHIHITO ISOYA (GRADUATE SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES, MEISEI UNIVERSITY) AND HIDEKI OKABAYASHI (DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY,SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES, MEISEI UNIVERSITY) MEISEI UNIVERSITY ANNUAL REPORT ON PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH, 2012, 30, 7―16The purpose of this study is to examine the gender differences in the relationship between emotionalsupport exchanges with friends and ego identities among universitystudents. A questionnaire surveywasconducted on 356 students, and 313 valid responses were collected. As a result of analysis of variance,gender differences of its relationship were found. In order to establish their ego identities,it is importantfor male students to provide emotional support to their friends. However, it is important for femalestudents not only to provide emotional support to their friends but also to receive it from them. Futureresearch might focus on the different mechanisms used byboth genders in the process of establishing theirego identities.Key Words :Social Support, Ego Identity, Adolescence, Friendship
