Hayashi:Development and Testing of a New Indirect Attitude Measure for Pictorial Objects5participants arethought tohavedifficultyinrespondingcorrectlybecause of an automatic tendencytorespond in the affirmativeto emotional consistencyand in the negative to emotional inconsistency. In sum, there are two potential processes underlyingtheSECT that increaseresponselatencies in ablock in which there is inconsistency between thetarget’s converted and original valence: cognitiveload and theautomatictendencyto judgeemotionalconsistency. For this reason,it is expected that theSECT is a better method with which to measureattitudes toward pictures than the FUMIE test. The Purpose of the Present StudyExperiment 1 measured attitudes toward a positivepicture, a neutral picture, and a negative pictureusing the two methods mentioned above, andcompared the resultant attitude scores. The emotionalvalence of the three target pictures used wasconfirmed in previous studies. Therefore, ifthenewindirect measures proposed in the present studymeasure attitudes toward these three picturesappropriately, the three attitude scores obtainedwill differ from each other. Additionally, Experiment1compared theefficiencyoftheSECT andtheFUMIE test bycomparing the three attitude scoresobtained.Experiment 1MethodParticipants. As a part of an experimental psychologylaboratory course, 13 Japanese universitystudents (five men, eight women, average age=20years, age range:19-23)participated in the experiment.Materials. An emotionally positive picture, anemotionally neutral picture, and an emotionallynegative picture were selected from the InternationalAffective Picture System (IAPS;Lang,Bradley,&Cuthbert,2005)andusedastarget picturesforindirect measures. Another two emotionally positivepictures and two emotionallynegative pictureswere selected from the IAPS and used as fillerpictures for indirect measures.Theseseven pictureswere not related to socially delicate matters. Theappendix shows slide numbers, mean emotionalvalence, and contents for the seven pictures fromthe IAPS (Lang et al., 2005).Apparatus. Seven personal computer systemswereset up in a soundproofed room. Each computersystem consisted of an Apple personal computer(Apple Inc.,CA),a 17 in.color LCD monitor, and afull-sized keyboard. Each system was separated bypartitions.Procedure.Fiveto seven participants weretestedat onetime.Theprocedurewas separatedintothreeparts. The first part measured attitudes towardthree target pictures using the FUMIE test. Thesecond measured attitudes toward three target picturesusing theSECT.Halfoftheparticipants weretested using theFUMIE test and then theSECT;theother half were tested in the opposite order.
